Being a Teacher.

Being a Teacher is me - it is central to my personal and professional identity. I began my teaching career in 1993 in an urban school district outside of Washington, D.C. During those formative years, I taught a variety of social studies courses from United States history to microeconomics.  Since then, my path has led to me a variety of opportunities from working with adjudicated youth desiring a high school diploma to corporate entities like Duechte Bank wanting to increase trust and communication with employees. Upon earning my Ph.D., I was able to see my lifelong dream of becoming a teacher education professor come to life.  Driving me to achieve this goal was the central belief that for me to bring about the kind of change I want to see in the sphere of education, I needed to get the heart of teaching and learning in America - and, that is with teachers.

Pedagogy is my jam.  Pedagogy is at the heart of my work as a teacher education professor.  And, knowing this is where my expertise lies, I acknowledge that I have much to learn. When COVID came crashing into our lives, I realized that I was going to have to rethink the way I engaged with teaching and learning. I had to “shivot” (a shift and a pivot) from the pedagogical tools I had relied upon my entire career.  From my own course adjustments, developments, and changes. I realized that there was “no going back” to the way I used to teach.

Human-Centered Pedagogy

Students are not just passive recipients of knowledge but active co-creators of their educational experience. By carefully curating activities and thought-provoking discussions, we can encourage students to explore their unique identities and perspectives while fostering a deep sense of empathy and understanding for others - discovering the HUMAN in all us. This cultivation of empathy is a cornerstone human-centered pedagogy, as it lays the groundwork for meaningful connections that extend far beyond the classroom walls.

Foundational Beliefs

Belonging
A fundamental element in creating strong learning communities. It establishes a supportive, engaging, and inclusive environment where individuals can grow, thrive, and achieve their full potential. When learners feel that they belong, they are more likely to invest in their learning, contribute actively, and form meaningful connections with others, leading to a richer and more rewarding educational experience for everyone involved.
